While in New York City, on route to the Krishnamacharya Yoga Festival, Sri Pattabhi Jois and Sharath Rangaswamy, received news that Sharath’s father who is in India, suffered from a heart attack and passed away. Hence they are returning to India to fulfill this calling and will not be able to be part of the Krishnamacharya Yoga Festival, nor the remaining tour they had planned here in the United States.

However, the Krishnamacharya Yoga Festival, an homage to Sri Krishnamacharya, will go on as planned, albeit with some modifications. More information on the revised schedule will soon be available on the website. Plans are on to maintain the classes, which Guruji Sri Pattabhi Jois and Sharath were scheduled to teach. These classes will be taught by two of the senior Ashtanga teachers, chosen by Guruji. Sri Pattabhi Jois regrets that he will not be part of this historic event, and urges all participants to go forward and be part of this festival that honors his teacher Sri T Krishnamacharya. We are extremely touched by his support to make this event a grand success despite the tough time he and his family are going through.

We request students to offer their prayers to the family. We also urge people to respect and understand the new situation, and to show support towards Guruji by being part of the festival.

As yoga finds its way into so many households today, it is completely changing the way people live, relate and look at life and responsibility. Originating in India thousands of years ago, this simple yet practical discipline has influenced the lives of millions of people across the globe. Over the years, yoga has seen its share of ups and downs in terms of popular acceptance, but its inherent universality and the spiritual strength of great masters have helped keep it alive.

"I have no hesitation in being part of this event that honors my
teacher. I am what I am today, because of his blessings"

 - Sri Pattabhi Jois, Mysore, India

"Teaching at this event with Sri Pattabhi Jois, is the best
pilgrimage I can embark on to honor my teacher"

- Sri T K V Desikachar, Chennai, India

One such master, who was greatly responsible for yoga’s renaissance in the twentieth century, was Sri
_T_Krishnamacharya (1888-1989). Revered as the grandfather of modern yoga, Sri_Krishnamacharya’s teachings have influenced nearly every contemporary school of yoga. In a lifetime dedicated to the teaching and transmission of yoga, Sri_T_Krishnamacharya touched millions of people directly and indirectly. His dedicated efforts in the face of obstacles, opposition and even ridicule in some situations, went a long way in restoring yoga to the glory it deserved.

Some of Sri T Krishnamacharya’s students such as Mataji Indra Devi, Sri Pattabhi Jois, Sri B K S Iyengar and Sri T K V Desikachar have also contributed significantly towards carrying forth the legacy of their teacher.

Today, as yoga is at the pinnacle of universal popularity, it is important that we come together to remember and commemorate the man who made it possible. He never set foot beyond the land of his birth, but today his name is synonymous with yoga the world over. If today so many of us benefit from or make our living yoga as students and teachers, it is due in no small measure to the efforts of Sri T Krishnamacharya. We can only offer our gratitude in spirit to this generous master, who by sharing his knowledge made yoga what it is today.

As part of the 115th birth anniversary of Sri T Krishnamacharya, we present the Krishnamacharya Yoga Festival (KYF) to remember and acknowledge his efforts. Join us as we honor this great master and experience the legacy that he left us through two of his prime students, Sri_Pattabhi_Jois and Sri_TKV_Desikachar. The Festival will be held at the Ramada Plaza Hotel, San Francisco. The classic yet friendly ambiance, coupled with its downtown location and ease of accessibility makes this an ideal venue for this rare event.

Join us and be a part of history
